Suicide on Tokyo's Keio Line strands commuters
May 23, 2019, Tokyo, Japan: Today was one of those beautiful spring days when the temperature was perfect, the skies were sunny and a light breeze was blowing. But for one lost soul it was a day to end their life. This occurred around 3:35 pm at Kami-Kitazawa Station on the Keio Line, a major commuter line connecting the western suburbs to the central part of the city. This caused a one hour delay just before rush hour, halting Keio rail services in both directions and stranding tens of thousands of commuters from Shinjuku to Seiseki-Sakuragaoka. This included myself, stuck in a station not far from where the jumper ended their life. Although Japan has seen a decrease in suicides which peaked at over 32,000 deaths in 2003, it still ranks high among major industrialized countries with around 20,000 suicides per year. This is now the leading cause of death among youths aged ten to fourteen.
