The new Fogo Island Shed. We designed this building to expand the artist and creative community on Fogo Island. Inspiration was drawn from our previous work on the island as well as the vernacular forms of the region’s traditional fisherman’s stages and houses. This is essentially a simple shed. The building has no electricity - a deliberate throwback to a simpler age that has the effect of focusing the mind, increasing the awareness of the seasons and the light. It has an atmosphere like the cabin I grew up in as a kid where we had kerosene lamps and when it got dark outside you went over to candlelight. It slowed things down.
