Palau: The jellyfish in Palau’s famous Jellyfish Lake used to be so numerous you could hardly see through them. Then, a few years ago they all died. A slight increase in salinity, and just like that, one of Palau’s primary natural attractions was gone. In a place that relies on its stunning marine ecosystem, and the tourists that make the trek to see it, the loss was more than just a tragic environmental disaster… it was an economic one too.

I took for granted that if I ever got lucky enough to travel to Palau, I would be able to snorkel with the jellies. It’s pretty crazy to think how close I came to missing out on this surreal experience. But much more importantly, it’s crazy to think how close the world came to losing this spectacular biological phenomenon.

Obviously this story has a happy ending! And I think it’s sooo important to know that happy endings are possible. ☺️ With careful management and ongoing research, Palau’s Golden Jellies are making a come back, and the lake is now open to the public again. Still, it’s a poignant reminder that nothing is guaranteed, the future is happening right now, and second chances are few and far between. #savethereef @savethereef #WHPplanetearth
