letters sent from the road.
sometime around eleven I tossed on an old playlist- one after another- rolling along like the pavement, more than one of our songs, songs that sounded like you were asleep in the seat beside me. got to the ocean a few minutes past midnight, walked towards the shore under a starlit sky, only light from a dull lamp in the distance polluted infinity. sand kicked off my feet and waves crashed with a steady hum. I guess I missed you then, in a way I can’t really explain, just wish you could’ve been with me watching the stars. felt like a pure way to miss someone, simple desire to share. started thinking of what to say, wondering what you’d like to hear. figured when you read this maybe your feet would be in the sand, the ocean might sing you awake, as it had asleep. around then I started smiling, because I knew you would be. that you were somewhere you loved, that the sun was warm even before it kissed the horizon, that the breeze smelled of salt and that your skin glistened under a thin dress of humidity. sitting in the sand I imagined you happy and that made me happy. made me excited to hear your stories, that they be filled to the brim, so filled you’ll have trouble telling them fast enough to catch up to your excitement. made me want to dig up some stories of my own so they’d be worth sharing when I see you. almost fell asleep out there, on the sand, closed my eyes long enough they almost didn’t wake up, maybe when they do I’ll be in California, dreaming of the trouble we might find. #shotoniphone
