Today is @lsarsour ’s birthday. Here’s her message to the #WomensMarch community:
“Today is my birthday. I turned 39, the age Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was when he was assassinated. He was murdered for fighting for the right to be who he was. In the past week, 51 of my fellow Muslims were murdered in New Zealand as they prayed, killed for just being who they are.
Some women hide their age, or their beliefs in fear of being judged. But I refuse to hide any part of who I am: Today, I am 39. I’m visibly Muslim. I choose to wear a hijab and I am proud to be a Palestinian-American Brooklyn-born New Yorker.
Women’s March is a movement where I can be all of who I am, and show other women and girls that they can too. We don’t always agree on everything but every single one of us deserves to be treated with dignity and respect regardless of who we are or who we choose to be.
The same ideology that inspired the Christchurch shooters inspired the Pittsburgh shooter. They were inspired and radicalized by the xenophobic and hateful rhetoric of Trump and his administration. Trump has declined to address whether he recognizes the rise in white nationalism that is clear for the eye to see.
I won’t let hate win. I will continue to put my family, my career, and my life on the line to protect and defend all of us because, at the end of the day, love really does trump hate.
In solidarity and love,
