Shortly after taking the @natgeo Planet or Plastic pledge, I decided to do some research to quantify how severe the single use plastic problem really is. Here are just a few of the countless heartbreaking and horrifying estimates that I found:
- due to micro plastics invading everything from the oceans to our food chain, it is estimated that the average person consumes 5 grams of plastic per week. The same weight as a standard credit card.
- 9 million tons (!) of plastic waste end up in the ocean each year—this is equivalent to five plastic grocery bags stuffed with plastic trash sitting on every foot of coastline around the world.
- more than 40% of plastic is used once and thrown away and less than a fifth of all plastic gets recycled globally.
This is just a snippet of what I’ve learned in the last 2 weeks and the numbers are truly staggering. Follow the link in my bio to take the @natgeo Planet or Plastic pledge and be part of the solution, not the problem.
