Let's talk another human impact: 💩! There are 68 to 103 metric tons of human waste on the West Buttress route of Denali. That's at least 68 elephant sized piles of excrement tossed in surrounding crevasses, pit toilets or on the surface! The feces doesn't decompose or get ground down by glaciers and is expected to start surfacing in 70 years and continue for more than 200. To combat this problem the park service is requiring all future climbers below Camp Four to collect their waste in the park's Clean Mountain Cans for removal on flights from base camp. I know most of you aren't summiting Denali, but this is another example of why proper poo disposal is so important in the backcountry, nobody likes poopsicles!
