With its low-slung, modernist design, the Boots D90 West Headquarters Building made a mark when it debuted in Nottingham, England in 1968. One of SOM’s first projects in the UK, the two-story steel structure introduced an innovative concept for the modern workplace and became recognized as an early and influential example of the open-plan office. The design provided a new degree of efficiency and adaptability for the @bootsuk pharmacy chain, with flexible interiors based on a 6-foot module and offices arranged around the perimeter. In 1996, the building was added to @historicengland ’s National Heritage List for England.
