PLEASE SHARE: Rosebery House (1997) in Highgate Hill Brisbane, by Peter O’Gorman & Brit Andresen, is under threat of irrevocable modifications that will devastate its architectural integrity & that of the gully landscape it’s sited in. It was recently sold and a development application recently lodged, if approved, will slam into the side of the house & transect the gully completely destroying the relationship of the house sensitively responding to the typical Brisbane gully running through the site and the surrounding vegetation.
Link in bio for submissions. Hit Application enquiry, input the address - 1 Derby Street, Highgate Hill - & hit lodge submission. Important issues to address include the non-compliant height, as well as the un-assessed impact on built and natural heritage, interruption of the overland flow path, soil stability, site ecology and overdevelopment of a site directly upstream of a public reserve and the Brisbane River. International submissions are also welcomed!! ◀️
"Rosebery House, [..] is located [..] at the southern end of a long narrow watershed that runs from Highgate Hill to the Brisbane River. The architectural intentions include establishing coherence in landscape / building relations, developing transactional space & creating degrees of transparency and enclosure through layered space. The landscape is characterised by its gully topography & its visual privacy despite its proximity to the city & its nearness to the Brisbane River. Site qualities also include [..] layers of [..] vegetation typical of gullies in the area. The spatial & physical continuity between the hill & the river was important to retain. Preserving the long, undulating space of the gully became influential in the decision to site the house as a long, narrow timber structure along its eastern slopes.” Andresen & O’Gorman Architects’ Statement
