Mindset is like a 🔑 opening endless versions of one reality. — After we entered this cave we found a little light thru the tunnel.. I would not want to be caught in here at high tide. Epic capture by @modusphoto

Humans are incredible at adapting to almost any situation. It definitely has its advantages, but I didn’t realize how powerful the disadvantages could be. - For almost 16 years, I lived and worked in NYC. When I was younger it was the only place I wanted to be. I was exactly where I wanted. As I got older and traveled more, I began to notice the longer I was away from NYC, the more I dreaded returning. - It got so bad, depression would sink in, before I even left for my trip bc I knew returning would be that difficult. It made me almost not want to go. However, about a week after I returned to NYC I felt happy again. I felt fine. Then one day it hit me, I had adapted to my surroundings. I wasn’t as happy as I could be, I had just adapted. That realization shook me. I knew it was time to go. My wife and I planned our move to Hawaii. We didn’t just up and leave, but built a plan. - This photo of @tommypierucki represents the ability to know when it’s time to walk in a different direction. A direction that makes you truly happy.

Growing up the term Over / Under only referred to betting. I much prefer this definition. Shot on @sonyalpha @myoshimoto

Amazing experience to learn how they inflate, launch, and pilot this balloon. I had no idea the landing would consists of a hop, skip, skid, and full on basket lean. It was probably my favorite part 😆Check the story for some video of the wild, yet routine landing.

Anyone have their mind changed lately? I don’t think we celebrate that enough when it happens. Even if it’s just a small change. I used to think a photo should accurately represent reality. I wasn’t a fan of heavy edits. I considered it cheating. I’ve changed. Now unless you’re a war correspondent or a documentary photographer, the more dreamy a photo edit, the more I tend to like it.

I remember growing up as a kid, I found rainbows disconcerting. Multiple adults actually told me a rainbow represented God’s promise not to commit genocide, again. Let that sink in for a moment... Grown Adults in the 20th century, even with the benefit of a college education, taught children that Mr. ROY.G.BIV was a contract from an invisible sky fairy to not murder you. — I believe reality is much more beautiful. One of the best books I read communicating basic science was Dawkins, Unweaving the Rainbow. If you’re of a curious mind, check it out.

Are you for protecting our Oceans? I am, yet I flew all the way to Tonga to photograph these beautiful whales, emitting tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere on my way there and back. The contradiction is not lost on me. — We have know for years, that Jetting off on one holiday is so bad for global warming that it wipes out the benefits of 20 years of recycling, yet we all do it anyway. Then we feel better because we stopped drinking bottled water. — I notice celebrities trumpeting plastic free, while they jet set the world for film and television. At what point is flying the globe to promote saving it, making things worse? — Here is what science tells us about how we as individuals can make a significant impact on Global warming. These things can actually be measured in tonnes of CO2. I’m not saying to stop recycling, we should get rid of single use plastics, but we need to be honest about what’s having the largest impacts. 1. Fly less 2. Eat less meat 3. Have less children

Could not be happier then ringing in the New Year at home in Kailua, HI. The fireworks set off by neighbors get louder every year. I think it rivals most cities productions. Mahalo @frank.shoots for this photo.

That’s me waiving bye to 2019 👋🏽 — With only one day left in the year, we think back about what we could have done differently. Some big things, but some small too. I noticed that I rarely share anything about myself online. It’s probably due to my previous career in the NYPD, but I’m going to make more of an effort in 2020 and I hope you all do the same. So I thought I’d start early. Check my story for an “About Me,” that talks a bit about my life before social media (if you’re so young you don’t know what life was like prior to social media, then you missed out a little) and how I landed in Hawaii from NYC. Here are some highlights. —— -My family is from New York City, but I was born in New Jersey. -I grew up wakeboarding in Florida. -After college, I moved to NYC for graduate school, to study forensic psychology and completed research projects for the FBI. -I joined the NYPD at 22 years old. -My favorite color is blue. -I’ve been shot at, pepper sprayed, thrown thru walls, and I totaled 2 NYPD cruisers during pursuits. -I’ve taken about 20 polygraphs, but I’ve really lost count. (If you’re wondering, they don’t work, it’s all pseudoscience nonsense). -I’m an atheist / skeptic. -I mostly spent my time at work conducting large scale investigations for conspiracy to comment murder. -I value science, rational thought, critical thinking, and reason above anything else. -I was part of a plain clothes unit in Harlem designed to take guns off the street. -I became an expert witness in gang terminology. -I retired as an NYPD detective in 2016. -I’ve been shooting photography professionally for 1.5 years. -First time I picked up a real camera was in Africa in 2009. -I live in Kailua, Oahu. -I’ve traveled to 5 continents and about 50 countries. I have a about 160 left. —— Mahalo @frank.shoots for the photo.

For the new year let’s not worry so much about offending one another. If you worry about hurting people’s feelings and disturbing social sensibilities, you’re not going to put your ideas forward and we all lose. Let your ideas stand tall and cast a long shadow.

Every time I see this wave, it reminds me of the “arena” in Roosevelt’s famous quote. If you haven’t heard this quote, check the story and give it a read. One of my all time favorites.

Often while flying I’ll look out the window and see something like this. I have 2 immediate and visceral emotions. Absolute Joy in the beauty of this world, followed quickly by crushing anxiety that I’ll only experience a fraction of it.

I’ve finally gotten to the point where I don’t hate my photos a week after I take them.. Well sometimes I still do. But this is one of my favorite photos I’ve taken this year. I had to plan the Milky Way, weather, location, and convince a group of friends to stay awake past 0100. The stars literally had to align. @samsventures_ @drn_diaz @i.k.e_n @myoshimoto @jacksonb3iii @nbradley0

This evening did not go as planned. The Moon alignment was off, the route was a bit treacherous, and I completely destroyed my camera while attempting to dodge a wave. I saved it from the surf, but not from smashing it against the lava rock. — This photograph was the combination of many efforts, not just mine. When you cooperate with others you can achieve something greater than when alone. Let’s keep lifting each other up, sending compliments, and positivity. We are all in this together. @frank.shoots @anne_marsuperstar
