The irony of tragedy is the unity we experience after.
Suffering brings us closer together.
For a moment, we realize that we are all connected.
As human beings, we all seek happiness and try to avoid suffering.
The factors which divide us - race, religion, gender, politics, class, etc - are much more superficial than our humanity
which we share.
In Hawaii, the islands are smaller and our connections are closer.
Maybe it's the fact that we are so isolated - floating alone, but together - in the vastness of the Pacific Ocean.
Maybe it's our culture, the people, or the beauty of the land.
Whatever it is, we know we are all deeply interconnected.
We all belong to Hawaii, and Hawaii belongs to all of us.
Mahalo Officer Kalama and Officer Enriquez for giving the ultimate sacrifice and thank you for bringing so many of us closer together.
