We’ve been getting into the #Holiday spirit since Thanksgiving with some fun crafty projects with the kids, @trebunskaya spontaneously #dancing at tree farms, and decorating. #FestiveAF 🥳 I have to say, in the past I’ve never been the #holidays kind of person. There’s some family baggage that usually drudged up dissonant memories. But once the kids came along, with some encouragement from Anna, I decided to find aspects of the holidays I could get behind.
It feels like the #xmas season is rife with manufactured marketing gimmicks that drown out any poignancy and meaning. People are more focused on “presents” than “presence” and I would usually just ignore it all until New Year’s Eve (a holiday I love from an energetic perspective, starting anew, etc.) But the lovely Anna, who does enjoy some of the more traditional aspects of the holidays, and I came to a compromise on how we would create our new family’s traditions. .
While I personally do not subscribe to any particular organized religious affiliation, I do love and pay homage to #MotherNature , which I guess could be seen as more of a pagan concept. Many of the religious traditions involved in the holidays do have their roots in #pagan traditions. So we do the tree and #wreath , but I add elements of #nature (with some assistance from our daughter) - birds, butterflies, flowers, aspects that represent growth and flourishing.
We also do a #gratitude ceremony every night where each of us writes down something we’re #grateful for on a cutout shape - this year hearts ♥️ , last year was maple leaves 🍁 - and we hang them on the tree 🌲 .
We try to take the focus off of “gimme gimme gimme” and more on being thankful and “giving giving giving”. The kids are getting really into it, hope it sticks! 🙏🏽
This year I decided to attempt making my own wreath. It was a bit daunting, but after a trip to purchase a (sustainably farmed) #XmasTree , we asked them for any extra branches and they gave us a bunch. I picked up some other branches, pine cones, trimmed branches from an olive tree in our yard to add texture and accents. Plus a few supplies from @michaelscraftstore and it came together 💪🏽❤️ #HappyHolidays !
