WHAT YOU BRING WITH YOU
When leaving on a trip, what do you bring with you? Do you pack light and carry just a carry-on of essentials or nothing at all like a laidback nomad without belongings? Or do you LV your luggage into bags, boxes, suitcases and trunks like some bougie hoarders for an all-inclusive where you can’t live without at least 18 pairs of heels... for 4 days?
Despite my poking fun, it’s a serious question and one that, in my experience, says a lot about who you are and what you value.
I’m headed out for a month on Sunday. My luggage is a black Lululemon gym bag carry-on that’s got the essentials - hiking boots, yoga pants, 3 dresses, a couple t-shirts, pajamas and most importantly, a bikini. There’s also a pair of ballet flats, dress pants and 2 dress shirts for work. Balance.
I travel light. Always have. I don’t mind having to do a load of laundry on a trip to save space. It’s never bothered me to be snapped in the same outfit more than once on Instagram. Proudly sporting a CHAI HARDER tee from LA to NZ will make me laugh even if it doesn’t highlight much diversity in my social feed.
Packing light allows me to travel with ease. I stress less and explore more. I may not always have the “perfect” outfit but I’m comfortable, have a variety and more importantly... I’m there.
When I turned 30, I started my journey into minimalism. The ‘less is more’ mantra became who I am. At 35, I packed it all into a couple of green storage bins and a suitcase. I sold/donated the rest. My whole life (minus a mattress and desk) fit inside my Jeep.
I found peace when I stopped letting the stuff I owned, own me. So, I pack light. See more world. Do more things rather than own more things.
So my bag is packed, I’m ready to go, just wish my “giraffe” fit in this carry-on too. Instead I’ll carry him in my heart... he always fits there best.
