The Seventies has to be my favourite decade: the groovy music, New Hollywood and apparently, weed everywhere. Starring Matthew McConaughey, Jason London, Ben Affleck and Wiley Wiggins, Dazed and Confused is one of the best teen comedies ever made and offers a compelling look at the slacker culture of that incredibly bonkers decade. Even if Richard Linklater's second feature gets off to a tame start, the film soon picks up: exploring each archetype teenager of the decade and providing a funky story to obsess over.
Launching the career of McConaughey with one simple quote: OH YEAH, OH YEAH, OH YEAH!, the 1993 release became a cult classic, yet at the time was a massive flop. 20 years since Grease took us back to the decade of rock and roll, Dazed and Confused set out every element of 70s teenage life down to the atmosphere of the cruel initiation ceremonies and unfashionable hair styles. Each character represents one of many laughable stereotypes: Stoner, Cool Guy, Bully, Intellectual and Freshman, yet every one is compelling and entirely senseless.
In that very funky time in history, everything was so chilled out (man...), yet Dazed and Confused also explores the darker side of growing up: bullying, substance abuse and a lack of good fashion choice. However, the decade was full of bangin' music hits that filled the soundtrack full of energy. Putting Guardians to shame, the likes of Fox on the Run and Rock and Roll All Nite send the film through the stratosphere of teen classics. And for once, every tune feels like a perfect fit in the film; never dazing/confusing on what's happening.
Even though 1993 was a spectacular year for cinema: Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Groundhog Day and Mrs. Doubtfire, Dazed and Confused was an important, yet largely forgotten film from 26 long years ago. The coming-of-age comedy genre has been done to death in recent years, though the film was a rare treat: any comedy film that ends up on Netflix is unlikely going to be worth the watc, however PLEASE DO.
