York Minster is the biggest gothic structure west of the Alps. The title "minster" is attributed to churches established in the Anglo-Saxon period as missionary teaching churches, and serves now as an honorific title. The first structure was probably built AD 627. The current Dean and Archbishop are Jonathan Frost and John Sentamu respectively.
